Almost Human, Almost Blue…

Image
Good evening my friends, come in, sit down how about something refreshing to drink? Can you believe that’s the end of March already? Time, tempus, really does play tricks on us. I would like to say that I am rested after my trip to Prague, but the truth is I am filled with elation, excitement and it feels as though there are little butterflies after taking up residence in my stomach. It’s no secret that I love a good jazz session. There are some of the best clubs I have ever been to are in Prague and within a short distance of each other. So, for the jazz, and the music lover their senses are truly taken care of.   Prague, jazz, and the men who never quite feel My journey to Prague wasn’t for relaxation or a sightseeing trip. I had research that I needed to do, for a future project, one that I am working on after I finish the rewrite and edits on my current book. I booked an evening at a jazz club, a club based in an underground tunnel. The atmosphere was heavy w...

How I Write Gothic Fantasy Without Losing My Mind (Completely)

Image
Good evening my lovely friends. Welcome to the Militiverse Scriptorium.  I hope you have had an interesting week; we’ve been busy here in the Militiverse . I have yet to pack for my trip, but isn’t that the fun part, waiting until the last moment?  Please take the weight off your feet and get comfy, Lady Cora Cat is behaving this evening, so we won’t disturb her. Many of the DMs and chats that I receive on the socials, which I love getting, ask me about my world, the Militiverse , and why I chose to write gothic fantasy considering the other me writes contemporary romance. Well darlings, if you are comfortable and settled with a beverage, let’s have a little chat about how I remain sane while writing fantasy. Candlelight and Caffeine It’s no secret that I am a chronic insomniac, over the years it has been well documented on my socials how insomnia comes to hang out with me. It was during one of my insomniac periods over eighteen years ago that I began writing my very ...

The Secret Life of Titles

Image
Good evening, everyone, we are enjoying the Spring sunshine in the Militiverse this evening, while the corvids are busy building their nests. Can I offer you some refreshment? I am having a lovely full bodied glass of red wine. Let me ask you something my friends, when you pick up a book, do you ever wonder about the title? Where it came from or the meaning behind it? Pull up a seat and get comfy, let’s discuss book titles and the secrets that they hold.    The Music of a Title The old adage of never judging a book by its cover, is a well known saying. I myself have been guilty of buying a book just based off a very pretty cover. But what of a title? How important is a title for a book, and how does an author choose one? Sometimes, when I outline a book, I already know what the book will be called, the title is chosen and I am happy with it. When I write under my own name, Anna Daly McCabe, I write contemporary romance, so the titles like Glam Metal just se...

History as Seduction

Image
Good evening my friends, welcome to tonight’s Militiverse chat. There’s always something bright and intoxicating about the beginning of March. It’s the start of Spring, at least it is in the Militiverse. The flowers are beginning to bloom, scent fills the air, there is a giddiness one can’t describe but can certainly feel it. Almost as if being a child once more and waiting for the school holidays to come, and freedom to enjoy the long days ahead. History too, is like that, one passage read about an era, maybe twenty years ago, or on the social outlets, a piece appears around a movie, or a band from 1985, and you are back there, remembering it. But can you trust a memory? Memory edits. It softens edges. Turns blood into sepia. Let’s discuss the seduction that history plays on us, how the research a writer does leads one down a silken rabbit hole and why we get lost in it.  The First Glance Across the Centuries The first time I read a historical account, that didn’t feel like...
